David A. Benfield Student Travel Fellowships

David A. Benfield received his BS and MS degrees from Purdue University and a PhD from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has a distinguished 24 years in research related to virus diseases of food animals. In 1990, he was the co-discoverer of the cause of “mystery swine disease” or porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). He has remained a role model and mentor to many of those who are currently in the PRRS field. Currently, he is the Associate Director of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, The Ohio State University and a Professor in the Food Animal Health Research Program in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Travel fellowships for US graduate students will be available for up to $1,000 each to attend the 2015 International PRRS Congress in Ghent, Belgium. It is his hope that these fellowships provide students with the experience of attending international PRRS meetings to present their work and collaborate on PRRS.


Applicants must be US graduate students and must submit an abstract to the meeting.

The deadline to apply for a fellowship is March 31, 2015.
The application packet must include:
-A maximum three page curriculum vitae with contact information (email, phone number and mailing address)
-A maximum one page description of research interests including short and long term career goals
-A copy of the abstract submitted to the International PRRS Congress
